Connected New Urbanism: The future of the city is about people The future of the city is smart - that seems the overwhelming consensus in “Smart Cities” events. With the latest technologies, cites will exhibit smartness in how they are designed, developed and run, and it’s all about technology, not people.

The future of the city is, first and foremost, about people. That is what we believe, and our research agenda is to show how technologies can help. Nowadays city dwellers are increasingly networked (e.g., users of Twitter, Instagram, Flickr). Can their social dynamics be used to build better tools for future cities and promote what Jane Jacobs would call “life in the city” ? To promote, as New Urbanism puts it, walkable and mixed-use neighborhoods, sustainable communities, and healthier living conditions? To answer that question, a few years ago, our research started to focus on understanding how people psychologically experience the city. We used computer science tools to replicate 1970s social science experiments at scale, at web scale. The result of that research has been the creation of new maps, maps where one does not only find the shortest path but also the most enjoyable path [1]. What if we had a mapping tool that would return the most enjoyable routes based not only on aesthetics but also based on smell and sound? This talk will address that question by showing how a creative use of social media can tackle hitherto unanswered research questions (e.g., how to capture smellscapes and soundscapes of entire cities [2]).

Smart City: A view from India and China What is a smart city? The image that most commonly comes to mind in the developed world is that of a glittering mass of high rise buildings with futuristic systems to support the daily activities of its residents. However, when I asked a few of my students what smart cities mean to them they spoke of the mundane and not the high tech: buses that came on time, rent that was affordable and access to the amenities that cities offer. This is not every different from what residents in developing countries like China and India expect. A smart city should aspire to provide infrastructure to all its residents: the basics of water, sanitation, electricity, housing and mobility. In this talk I draw from case studies in India and China to try to raise new questions that I hope students will explore at Geomundus. Proving infrastructure to all the residents of cities raises questions about equity. Will everyone have equal access to jobs or will life be easier only for those who have cars and can afford transit? Will everyone have access to amenities like health care, parks and schools? Will everyone have a say in the governance of the city? How can we sustain a sense of community in neighborhoods within cities? What more can be done? How can we build fairness into these complex systems?

Workshop

Collaborative mapping - We are pleased to announce that this year HERE Map Creator workshop will be led by HERE.
Map Creator was launched in November 2012, as a way to encourage users with local knowledge to map their own neighborhoods and other areas. The platform allows users to perform a wide range of edits; from adding and editing roads, to updating POI′s and including details such as, speed limits and lane numbers.
As of 2015 the Map Creator platform is available in over 100 countries and in 37 languages.

Gala dinner

It will be a chance for all participants to get together and share ideas and thoughts, and of course to enjoy the rich cuisine in one of Lisbon’s nice restaurants. The event's official gala dinner will be served in Marretas Santos Bar.
